In the latter half of the 19th century, dressmakers and tailors would use a body form when making custom fitted clothing. This would allow them to display and make clothing avoiding the need for the customer to be present. From the transformation of the role in the use of mannequins through the years, retail stores have adopted this use of displaying clothing on a human-like body to sell their apparel for them.
